The Largest Chartering Chapter in AKA History
2005 proved to be an eventful year for the city of Chicago. The White Sox clinched the World Series for the first time in almost a century, Lollapalooza made its debut in Grant Park, and Barack Obama began his first term as a U.S. Senator. Surely, extraordinary feats were on the horizon. Destined to be a historic year, Chicago made history once again, specifically Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® history, with the chartering of Chi Omega Omega Chapter on June 18, 2005.
Affectionately called the “Historic 101,” the same number of women, striving to transform communities on the south side of Chicago, chartered Chi Omega Omega Chapter on June 18, 2005. As the largest chapter chartered in Alpha Kappa Alpha history, this dynamic group of women continues to grow not just in numbers but also in impact.
Shortly after the chapter’s inception, members of Chi Omega Omega established the Imani Pearls Community Development Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity. In 2006, Chi Omega Omega also became an associate member of the National Pan Hellenic Council-Chicago Chapter. Awarding over $150,000 in scholarships since 2005 and serving Chicagoland communities through rich and innovative programming, chapter members continue to promote the Sorority’s ideals of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. The chapter’s signature programs are the MLK Day of Service, HBCU College Fair, and Thanksgiving Giveaway and Bazaar.
Chi Omega Omega is comprised of a diverse group of women, including a member that has been active for 75+ years, three who have been members for over 50 years, and a number of Life Members. Our members hail from more than 36 different undergraduate and graduate chapters from across the country and shares one common goal: to come together as sisters and serve the community. While we strive to serve all mankind, our target communities are Bronzeville, Douglas, Englewood, Grand Boulevard, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, and Washington Park. Our group is truly unique, and as we strive to enhance the lives of others, we reaffirm the values of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
